The Hugest Flower in the World
March 14, 2009The Rafflesia flower grows for 1 year and then blooms for only five days. This is the biggest flower in the world and is also parasitic. The Rafflesia flower is a parasitic plant that grows on the lowerslopes of mountain ranges. It has a limited distribution and is only found in certain areas of Southeast Asia. The Rafflesia has no specific flowering season. It has no roots, stem or leaves and starts life as a small, dark brown bud attached to its host, the stem or root of a jungle vine. After taking approximately nine months to mature into a cabbage-sized bud, the plant opens. The petals, usually five, sometimes six, are red in colour and covered with lighter coloured spots. When in full bloom the floweremits a foul odour which attracts flies and other insects.
And guess what…!!!Several species of Rafflesia grow in the jungles of southeast Asia, including the Philippines. Many of them are threatened or endangered.
